Another meandering around the internet led me to this shiny website: Not Another Bill.
You just sign up (for yourself or as a gift for someone else) for however long you want at £15 a month. You (or they) then get sent a random present every month. The website doesn’t actually say what you’ll get, but I think it’s definitely more fun that way. Reviews by current subscribers say it ranges from vintage toys to one-off designer bits and bobs, all sourced from London’s markets or up and coming photographers, designers and printmakers (according to TimeOut). You also get a note that tells you where the gift was sourced, so you can find out about cool little places to find presents and new British design talent.
I don’t like it as much as Mr B’s Emporium because it’s not as personal a service (and just because I’m a book geek). But, quirky surprises through the post? Always exciting!
Edit: The website has just been updated, so you can now look at previous presents to see if it’s the kind of thing you like.
